Somalia's Camel Milk Revolution: A Boon for Employment and Public Health
Camel milk production is seeing a surge in Somalia, thanks to innovative entrepreneurs and support from the government.
Camels have been integral to Somali culture for centuries.
However, with the rise of modern agriculture, camel milk production has transformed from traditional to commercial, offering both economic opportunities and nutritional benefits.
Beder Camel Farm, established in 2006 by Jama Omar, is a pioneer in this shift.
The farm employs nearly 200 people and holds about 40% of Somalia’s market share for camel milk.
In addition to its dairy operations, the farm features a yogurt factory – the first in Somalia – which produces dairy products under the Beder brand now available across Mogadishu.
These developments represent an agricultural revolution that could redefine farming in Somalia.
