Saudi jazz singer Loulwa Al-Sharif: Crafting a unique sound from personal loss
From soulful Hijazi oud melodies to smoky jazz and blues tunes, the self-taught Saudi singer is making her presence felt on the music scene.
Riyadh-based jazz singer Loulwa Al-Sharif, also known as Lady Lou, has made a name for herself in the music world with her unique sound.
Leaving behind her career in journalism to pursue music full-time, Al-Sharif has been performing and songwriting since she was a teenager.
Growing up, she used to listen to Khaleeji (Gulf) and Tarab (classical Arabic music), singing Arabic songs and later discovering her love for English music.
Her turning point came after the death of her father, a musician himself, which inspired her to channel her emotions into music.
Al-Sharif has honed her craft at late-night jam sessions with members of the Jeddah music community, experimenting with genres such as rock, jazz and blues.
Today, she is recognized for blending different musical influences into her own distinct style.
