Saudi Nature Reserve Sees Boost in Biodiversity with 12 Rock Hyrax Births

Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve records multiple births of desert species, highlighting success of conservation efforts.
RAFHA, Northern Borders: Saudi Arabia’s Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve has reported a notable increase in biodiversity following the birth of 12 rock hyraxes during the first quarter of 2026.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, this uptick reflects positively on conservation and habitat recovery programs within the expansive protected area. The authority managing the reserve attributes the successful births to comprehensive breeding and environmental protection initiatives aimed at bolstering wildlife populations and enhancing the sustainability of desert species in their natural habitats.

These efforts are part of a broader program that saw more than 90 births across various wild species during the same period, including Arabian gazelles, Arabian oryxes, Cape hares, and red-necked ostriches. The rock hyrax’s successful breeding is emblematic of the success of reintroduction and habitat-management programs now seeing species reproduce naturally rather than solely through captive breeding efforts.

Known for their remarkable agility despite a compact appearance, these small herbivorous mammals are adapted to rugged mountain and rocky environments, utilizing caves and crevices to shield themselves from predators and harsh desert conditions.

They play a vital role in maintaining the balance of vegetation and supporting the food chain within desert ecosystems. The reserve, established by royal decree in 2018, spans approximately 104,800 square kilometers across Al-Jouf, Qassim, Hail, and Northern Borders regions.

It is managed by the Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Royal Nature Reserve Development Authority and features diverse landscapes including sand dunes, wadis, basalt plateaus, and seasonal floodplains.Recent years have seen an expansion of restoration efforts within the reserve through native tree planting, rangeland rehabilitation, anti-poaching patrols, and wildlife monitoring programs supported by scientific surveys and aerial observation.

The variety of species found there—such as the Arabian oryx, sand gazelle, caracal, and migratory birds like the Asian houbara—reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader environmental strategy aimed at protecting biodiversity and restoring natural habitats for future generations.
