Saudi Arabia Commits Two Billion Dollars to Phased Redevelopment of Aleppo Airports
Major Saudi-backed investment aims to modernise northern Syria’s aviation infrastructure and boost regional connectivity
Saudi Arabia will invest two billion dollars to redevelop Aleppo’s airports in multiple phases, according to a statement by a senior Syrian minister, marking one of the largest foreign-backed infrastructure commitments to Syria since the easing of international sanctions.
The investment is intended to restore and modernise air transport facilities damaged during years of conflict, with a focus on reviving commercial aviation and supporting economic recovery in northern Syria.
The minister said the project will be implemented in stages to ensure operational continuity while new terminals, runways and support facilities are constructed or upgraded.
Initial phases will prioritise safety, capacity expansion and compliance with international aviation standards, followed by longer-term development aimed at increasing passenger and cargo throughput.
Officials described the investment as a cornerstone of wider efforts to reintegrate Aleppo into regional and international transport networks.
Saudi participation reflects growing economic engagement with Syria following the restoration of diplomatic ties and the removal of many restrictions on investment.
The project is expected to involve Saudi engineering, construction and aviation services firms working alongside Syrian authorities.
It also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy of deploying capital into regional reconstruction projects that support stability, trade and economic integration.
Aleppo, once Syria’s commercial hub, has seen gradual rebuilding since the end of large-scale fighting, but infrastructure damage has continued to limit growth.
Upgraded airports are expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods, attract additional investment and support humanitarian and commercial operations.
Syrian officials said the airport redevelopment would create jobs and serve as a catalyst for further projects in transport, logistics and tourism.
The announcement adds to a series of recent Saudi-backed initiatives across sectors including telecommunications, energy and water, signalling sustained commitment to Syria’s reconstruction.
The phased airport development is expected to begin following final technical approvals, with authorities emphasising that progress will be closely coordinated to maximise economic impact and long-term viability.
