Saudi Arabia Advocates for UN Security Council Reforms at High-Level Meeting
Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed Al-Khuraiji emphasizes the need for enhanced global governance and multilateralism
On February 18, 2025, Saudi Arabia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Waleed Al-Khuraiji, addressed a high-level United Nations Security Council meeting focused on 'Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance'.
In his speech, Al-Khuraiji underscored the necessity of strengthening the international system's capacity to maintain peace and security, as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
Al-Khuraiji highlighted the increasing challenges confronting the global community, asserting that these require the Security Council to operate with utmost effectiveness, neutrality, and objectivity.
He called for a balance between efficiency and inclusive representation in any serious efforts aimed at reforming global governance.
Reiterating Saudi Arabia's commitment to intergovernmental negotiations on multilateral system reforms, Al-Khuraiji emphasized that such discussions should occur through the General Assembly, in line with resolution 62/557, which was adopted by consensus.
He also pointed to a growing crisis of confidence in the United Nations' ability, particularly that of the Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and resolving disputes through peaceful means.
Al-Khuraiji renewed Saudi Arabia's call for Security Council reforms to ensure more equitable representation, enhanced effectiveness in addressing global transformations, and increased efficiency in tackling shared challenges.
He affirmed the Kingdom's readiness to collaborate with other member states to achieve these objectives.
The meeting, held in the Security Council Chamber, was part of ongoing discussions aimed at strengthening multilateralism and improving global governance structures to better address contemporary international issues.
