Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Hails Saudi Arabia’s Steadfast Support for Palestinian Rights
Abbas praises Riyadh’s principled backing of ceasefire, statehood and Palestinian governance in joint statement with Türkiye
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas publicly commended Saudi Arabia’s ‘honorable and unwavering stances’ on the Palestinian cause following the conclusion of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to the Kingdom, as regional diplomatic coordination on the issue intensified.
Abbas welcomed a joint statement issued by Riyadh and Ankara that underlined shared positions on key priorities, including consolidating the ceasefire in Gaza, ending the occupation of the territory and restoring the role of the Palestinian Authority in governing the enclave.
The joint declaration also reaffirmed support for establishing an independent Palestinian state within the borders of 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international law, United Nations resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002 — positions that Abbas described as consonant with the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The Palestinian leader’s statement emphasised his appreciation for Saudi and Turkish leadership in upholding international legality and advancing political solutions that affirm freedom and independence for Palestinians.
He also highlighted the recognition in the joint communiqué of the vital role played by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East in delivering essential services.
Abbas’s remarks reflect sustained diplomatic engagement between the Palestinian leadership and key regional partners who are advocating for a negotiated political settlement.
The Saudi and Turkish declarations come amid ongoing efforts to reinforce ceasefire conditions and address the humanitarian and security challenges faced by Palestinian communities, including in Gaza.
Saudi Arabia’s support for Palestinian statehood and governance has been a consistent theme in its foreign policy, rooted in longstanding commitments to the two-state solution and regional stability.
With these developments, Abbas signalled optimism that reinforced international and regional support could contribute to advancing Palestinian aspirations under frameworks endorsed by Arab states and multilateral institutions.
