Lebanon Combats 'Terror Financing' amid US Sanctions on Hezbollah Members
President Aoun assures U.S. officials of Lebanon's efforts to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, following sanctions on three Hezbollah members.
BEIRUT: In response to recent U.S. sanctions imposed on three Hezbollah members accused of facilitating the financing of the militant group through money laundering activities, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has reassured U.S. officials that his country is actively working to prevent such financial crimes.
The sanctions, announced by Washington last week, allege that these individuals were involved in transferring tens of millions of dollars from Iran, which supports Hezbollah as its primary benefactor. The U.S. delegation, led by Sebastian Gorka, senior director for counterterrorism, visited Beirut to discuss strategies aimed at reducing the financial resources available to Hezbollah and Lebanon's efforts to disarm the group.
This visit underscores the ongoing international pressure on Lebanon to sever its ties with Iran and eliminate any support for Hezbollah, a group designated as terrorist by many Western countries. The recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024 resulted in significant damage to the group's capabilities, although it has not yet been fully disarmed.
Aoun emphasized that Lebanon adheres strictly to measures intended to curb money laundering, smuggling, and terrorism financing, enforcing severe penalties for financial crimes.
The U.S. Treasury statement indicates that a substantial portion of Iran's funding for Hezbollah has flowed through money exchange businesses operating in cash.Deputy director for counter-terrorism John Hurley stated that Lebanon has an opportunity to achieve freedom, prosperity, and security only if Hezbollah is disarmed and severed from Iranian funding and control.
This assertion highlights the strategic importance placed by the U.S. on weakening Hezbollah's financial backbone and its reliance on Iran.Following a request by President Aoun, Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon resulted in further casualties, raising the death toll since Saturday to five people.
In response, Aoun called for increased pressure on Israel to cease its ongoing military actions.
