KSrelief Commences Groundbreaking Conjoined Twin Separation Surgery
The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center initiates a complex surgery on conjoined Filipino twins in Saudi Arabia.
RIYADH: The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) has embarked on one of the most intricate surgeries involving conjoined twins, commencing the separation of Filipino twins Klea and Maurice Ann on Thursday morning.
Expected to span 24 hours, this procedure marks a significant milestone in medical science due to the unique challenges posed by the case. The operation involves separating conjoined twins joined at the head, a scenario that necessitates meticulous planning and execution.
According to Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, leading the program, the complexity of the surgery stems from critical factors such as the angle of the twins' heads, extensive cerebral venous sinus sharing, and overlapping brain tissue.
Additionally, one twin, Klea, suffers from heart failure and kidney failure, heightening the risks associated with the procedure.Guiding this monumental task is Dr. Moutasem Azzubi, a consultant pediatric neurosurgeon, alongside a multidisciplinary team of 30 consultants and specialists, including nursing and technical staff.
The operation is structured into five stages: anesthesia, intensive care management, advanced radiology support, and plastic surgery procedures.Despite the high stakes, with risk rates assessed up to 50% and potential severe neurological complications threatening up to 60% disability, the team has prepared exhaustively for this moment.
Consultations with another specialist medical center have reinforced their understanding of the case, ensuring a comprehensive approach.
The twins' parents were briefed thoroughly on the surgical plan and its implications, demonstrating both informed consent and emotional preparation. This life-changing surgery marks KSrelief's 70th operation within its esteemed conjoined twins separation program, which has been active since 1990.
Over this period, the initiative has supported 157 conjoined twins from 28 countries, setting a benchmark in pediatric surgical care.
The operation is taking place at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital, part of King Abdulaziz Medical City within the Ministry of National Guard in Riyadh.Dr. Al-Rabeeah extended heartfelt gratitude to Saudi Arabia's leadership — King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — for their unwavering support of this noble program.
