Jordan Signs $1bn Green Ammonia Project to Advance Clean Energy Transition

Agreement between Jordan's Ministry of Energy and Polish-Emirati consortium marks key milestone in country's shift towards clean energy.
In a significant move towards low-carbon industrial development and clean energy, Jordan has signed a $1 billion investment agreement for its first utility-scale green ammonia production facility.

This project, supported by a Polish–Emirati consortium with Dutch technical expertise, marks an essential step in the Kingdom's transition to sustainable energy sources.

The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and Jordan Green Ammonia Co., with the presence of Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan.

This development underscores Jordan's strategy to become a regional hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen production, utilizing its abundant solar and wind resources and leveraging Aqaba’s strategic position as an export gateway.

Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, emphasized that the project is a milestone in the Kingdom’s energy transition.

It demonstrates Jordan's ability to attract investment in green hydrogen and low-carbon fuels, facilitated by its robust regulatory framework and infrastructure.

The project will generate up to 550 megawatts of renewable generation capacity, utilizing modern energy storage systems.

The facility aims to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, with financial close expected in September 2027 and commercial operations set to begin in November 2030.

This initiative reinforces Aqaba’s role as a regional center for green industries and energy, enhancing its potential to export clean energy products.

Jordan's commitment to this project supports its climate commitments and aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 200,000 tonnes annually compared with conventional gas-based production.

It also positions the country as a leader in the development of low-carbon products, creating new export opportunities in global markets where demand is increasing.

In addition to producing sustainable fuel, Jordan Green Ammonia Co. has stated that the project will serve as a technical hub for advanced energy technologies and generate specialized job opportunities across its development cycle.

This marks a significant step towards developing an integrated project based on the latest global technologies in green ammonia production, contributing to knowledge transfer and creating high-quality job opportunities.

Jordan's efforts to transform its energy and water sector align with national development goals, focusing on investments in renewable energy, smart grid and storage systems, infrastructure modernization, and improved water efficiency.

The strong interest from global companies in investing in hydrogen and green ammonia projects reflects confidence in Jordan’s investment environment and its potential role in the clean energy sector regionally and globally.
