Italy and Azerbaijan to Strengthen Energy and Defense Ties
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announces plans to enhance cooperation with Azerbaijan in energy and defense during her visit to Baku.
During her official visit to Baku, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy and Azerbaijan will deepen their collaboration in the areas of energy and defense.
The move comes as European countries seek alternative sources of oil and gas following the ongoing Ukraine conflict and the recent tensions surrounding Iran's role in global energy markets.Azerbaijan has emerged as a significant energy supplier to Europe, particularly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has strained traditional energy routes.
According to Meloni, Azerbaijani oil and gas supplies have been crucial for Italy’s energy security during this period.
The two leaders agreed to enhance the volume of deliveries and transform their partnership into a permanent political coordination mechanism. In 2022, Azerbaijan provided Italy with approximately 9.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), representing about 16% of Italy’s total gas imports.
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan acknowledged Italy as the country's top trading partner and a key destination for its energy exports.
The two nations discussed expanding their energy collaboration by enlarging the TAP project, which is part of the Southern Gas Corridor. The strengthening of ties extends beyond energy, with discussions on enhancing cooperation in defense and security matters.
Meloni emphasized this as another significant area of mutual interest between Italy and Azerbaijan.
