The Secret Service reports a suspect fired shots on the National Mall, prompting officers to return fire and injuring an unrelated bystander.
On Monday afternoon, around 15th Street and Independence Avenue near the Washington Monument, a shooting incident occurred.
According to the Secret Service, a suspect initiated gunfire after being confronted by officers.
In response, the officers returned fire, unintentionally striking a bystander in the process.
This event transpired not far from the White House where President
Donald Trump was hosting a small business event.
The White House underwent a brief lockdown as authorities investigated the situation.
Journalists covering the event were ushered into a briefing room by the Secret Service to ensure their safety, and the presidential event continued unimpeded.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, transporting an adult male to the hospital for treatment.
An additional individual, believed to be a teenager, received medical attention on-site for minor injuries.
The D.C. Fire and EMS Department deferred further inquiries to law enforcement agencies concerning the incident.
The significant police presence at the scene was a reflection of the gravity of the situation, especially in light of a previous incident just over a week earlier.
On that occasion, an armed individual attempted to breach the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, resulting in minor injuries to both the assailant and a Secret Service officer.
Cole Tomas Allen has been charged in connection with that event.
The Secret Service advised the public to avoid the area around the National Mall while emergency operations were underway.
