Iran has reduced its military presence in Syria following a series of strikes on its forces, which have been attributed to Israel.
The sources close to Hezbollah and a war monitor reported that Iran has withdrawn its forces from the southern provinces of Quneitra and Daraa, which border the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.
However, Iran still maintains a presence in other parts of Syria.
The recent withdrawals come after several strikes on Iranian targets in Syria, including the destruction of the Iranian consulate in Damascus in April, which killed seven Revolutionary Guards, two of them generals.
A missile and drone attack by Iran against Israel in April 2021 was a response to an earlier Israeli strike in January 2021 that killed several high-ranking Iranian officials in Syria.
The source close to Hezbollah reported that Iran had already started withdrawing its forces from Syria following the January attack.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the withdrawal and noted that Iran-backed Lebanese and Iraqi fighters had taken their place.
Iran continues to deny having combat troops in Syria, only providing military advice and training.
The text reports that according to the Observatory, around 3,000 Iranian military personnel are stationed in Syria, with tens of thousands of Iran-trained fighters from Lebanon, Iraq, and
Afghanistan.
However, Abdel Rahman mentioned that some Iranian advisers have left Syria over the past six months, but a few still remain in Aleppo and Deir Ezzor provinces.
