ICJ Orders Israel: Ensure Food Supplies to Prevent Famine in Gaza
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel on Thursday to take immediate action to ensure the delivery of basic food supplies to the Palestinian population in Gaza.
The ICJ stated that Palestinians in Gaza are facing worsening living conditions and that famine and starvation are spreading.
The court noted that the situation has deteriorated to the point where famine is no longer just a risk, but a reality.
South Africa, which has an ongoing case against Israel for alleged state-led genocide in Gaza, requested these new measures.
In January, the ICJ had already ordered Israel to refrain from any acts that could constitute genocide and to prevent its troops from committing genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza.
The Israeli court upheld previous measures from January but added that Israel must ensure unobstructed delivery of essential services and humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
This can be achieved by increasing and maintaining open the number and capacity of land crossing points for an extended period.
Israel is required to submit a report within a month detailing how they have implemented the ruling.
