Sudan Requests Emergency UN Meeting Over UAE's Alleged Support for Paramilitaries
Sudan has requested an emergency UN Security Council meeting to discuss the UAE's alleged support for paramilitaries battling the army in Sudan.
The conflict between the regular army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in April 2023, with the army accusing the UAE of providing weapons and equipment to the RSF.
The UAE denies these claims.
The diplomatic source requested an urgent session to discuss the UAE's "aggression" against the Sudanese people and the terrorist militia.
Sudan's UN representative, Al-Harith Idriss, requested an investigation by the UN Security Council into the UAE's support for the Rapid Support Militia (RSF) in Sudan.
Idriss accused the UAE of being an accomplice in the RSF's crimes against the state.
The UAE denied these allegations in a letter to the council last week.
The Security Council expressed concern over escalating violence in Sudan's North Darfur region and the potential for an offensive by the RSF and allied militias on El Fasher.
El Fasher, the last Darfur state capital not under RSF control, is a city hosting a large number of refugees.
UN officials, including High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, have expressed grave concerns about potential attacks on the city.
An attack would have devastating consequences for the civilian population, particularly in an area already on the brink of famine.
The Sudan war has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and displacement of over 8.5 million people, making it the largest displacement crisis in the world.
In December, Khartoum demanded the departure of 15 Emirati diplomats following accusations of Emirati support for the RSF.
Protests in Port Sudan also called for the expulsion of the UAE ambassador.
Last August, The Wall Street Journal reported that weapons were discovered in a United Arab Emirates (UAE) cargo plane carrying humanitarian aid to Sudanese refugees in Chad.
Ugandan officials made this revelation, but the UAE denied the allegations.
