Former Wife of Daesh Official Charged with Crimes Against Humanity for Allegedly Enslaving Yazidi Teen in Syria
France has accused the ex-wife of a high-ranking Daesh (ISIS) official of crimes against humanity for enslaving a 16-year-old Yazidi girl in Syria.
Sonia M., the former spouse of Abdelnasser Benyoucef, the Daesh head of external operations, was charged on March 14, according to French media.
The victim, now 25, claimed Sonia M.
raped her twice and was aware of her husband's sexual assaults against her.
The woman was held captive for over a month in 2015 and was not allowed to eat, drink, or shower without Sonia M.'s consent.
Sonia M.
denied the multiple rape allegations against her in an interview with French investigators, claiming that only one rape had been committed by her former husband.
She stated that the teenager in question had the freedom to leave her room, eat what she wanted, and use the toilet as needed.
Sonia M.'s lawyer, Nabil Boudi, dismissed the charges as opportunistic accusations and criticized the prosecutors for attempting to make Sonia M.
responsible for serious crimes due to the inability to apprehend the real perpetrators.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Benyoucef in connection to the case.
France initiated an investigation in 2016 to examine genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes inflicted on ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq and Syria since 2012.
The investigation primarily focuses on the suffering of Yazidi, Christian communities, and the Sheitat tribe.
The French PNAT anti-terror unit is leading the probe with the objective of documenting these crimes and identifying any French nationals involved in the Islamic State organization.
