Gang Violence Displaces Hundreds in Haiti

Gang Violence Displaces Hundreds in Haiti

A new wave of gang violence in Haiti has led to the displacement of hundreds of people, with many seeking refuge on a road leading to Toussaint Louverture International Airport.
PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI: The escalating situation in Haiti has seen hundreds displaced due to recent gang clashes.

These conflicts have erupted across various northern neighborhoods within the capital city, Port-au-Prince, primarily since the assassination of President Jovenal Moïse in July 2021.

Monique Verdieux, a 56-year-old resident, recounted fleeing her home after witnessing armed men set fire to houses in her neighborhood.

Her family dispersed, and she is uncertain about their whereabouts.

Verdieux now finds herself among the displaced, forced to sleep on the streets due to the unsafe conditions for return.

The violence has severely impacted the region, with over 90% of Port-au-Prince falling under gang control.

Police report that gangs have expanded their activities to include looting, kidnapping, sexual assaults, and rape within rural areas.

The absence of a president since Moïse's assassination compounds the crisis.

For weeks, local businesses such as Barbancourt rum makers and two major bottlers have issued warnings regarding deteriorating security near the international airport.

They express disappointment over the government's insufficient response to these issues.

These companies emphasize that the poor state of the roads leading to the airport complicates efforts by Haitian security forces to patrol in the area.

As significant contributors to Haiti's fiscal revenues, they question the practicality of securing an airport amidst such conditions.

Efforts to address this escalating violence have seen international intervention.

In April, foreign troops linked to a United Nations force began arriving in Haiti to aid in quelling ongoing unrest.

The U.N. Security Council approved a plan for a 5,550-member force in late September but has yet to fully deploy all members across the island nation.

Troops from Chad have been deployed thus far.

According to an International Organization for Migration report, gang violence has displaced over 1.4 million individuals, with approximately 200,000 currently residing in overcrowded and underfunded sites within Port-au-Prince.

The situation remains dire as authorities grapple with the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
