The meeting comes a week ahead of US President Donald Trump's scheduled visit to China for a summit.
BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi commenced a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, in Beijing on Wednesday, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua.
Araqchi's one-day trip precedes US President
Donald Trump's upcoming visit to China for a summit with President Xi Jinping, scheduled for May 14 and 15.Earlier this week, tensions escalated in the Gulf region as both the US and Iran engaged in a series of attacks, vying for control over the Strait of Hormuz through maritime blockades.
This development poses a threat to an already fragile truce in place between the two nations.
Following these events, Trump announced that the US Navy would facilitate the passage of ships through the strait.
However, this operation was temporarily suspended after Trump expressed 'great progress' towards reaching a comprehensive agreement with Iran on Tuesday. As of now, Tehran has not issued an official response to the recent developments.
The Iranian foreign minister emphasized that the attacks carried out on Monday—after stating that his country was considering Trump's request for negotiations—demonstrate that there is no military solution to the ongoing crisis.
China maintains a broadly neutral stance in this conflict while opposing any violations of Iran's sovereignty.
Additionally, China has facilitated mediation efforts and called upon both the US and Iran to uphold the ceasefire and lift restrictions imposed on the Strait of Hormuz.
