China Pledges to Be Saudi Arabia’s ‘Most Reliable, Dependable Partner’ as Ties Deepen
Top Chinese diplomat tells Saudi crown prince Beijing will strengthen strategic cooperation across trade, investment, energy and regional security
China has reaffirmed its commitment to serve as a “most reliable, dependable partner” to Saudi Arabia, underscoring ambitions to expand strategic cooperation across economic, energy and diplomatic arenas.
The pledge was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during high-level talks with Saudi authorities, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as part of Beijing’s broader engagement with the Gulf amid evolving global geopolitics.
In remarks delivered in Riyadh, Wang emphasised China’s readiness to inject “stabilising factors” into the bilateral relationship and support Saudi development goals while working together on issues of regional peace and security.
The outreach reflects China’s desire to position itself as a trusted partner in Saudi Arabia’s long-term transformation and in efforts to promote stability in the Middle East.
Wang’s comments came during a diplomatic tour of the region, where he also urged Gulf Cooperation Council members to finalise a long-pending free trade agreement with China, citing mature conditions and shared interests after more than two decades of negotiations.
Saudi Arabia and China have steadily bolstered their ties in recent years, deepening cooperation in energy, trade and infrastructure.
Beijing remains a principal buyer of Saudi oil, while Riyadh has supported aligning Chinese initiatives such as the Belt and Road with its own Vision 2030 economic diversification strategy.
The two sides recently agreed to mutual visa exemptions for diplomatic and special passport holders, and discussions covered collaboration in green energy, investment and diplomatic coordination on regional issues including relations with Iran and the Palestinian question.
The renewed emphasis on reliability and partnership reflects Riyadh’s strategy to diversify its external economic and strategic relationships while maintaining robust ties with traditional partners.
Saudi officials have emphasised the complementary nature of cooperation with China, particularly in technology, investment and supply chains, even as the kingdom manages its broader diplomatic agenda amid global competition and shifting alliances.
Analysts say the reaffirmation of mutual trust signals continued momentum in Sino-Saudi relations, with both sides seeking to translate political goodwill into sustained economic and strategic outcomes.
For China, deepening ties with Riyadh serves multiple objectives, including securing long-term energy supplies, expanding market access for Chinese industries and increasing influence in the Middle East.
For Saudi Arabia, closer ties with Beijing provide diversification of foreign partnerships and support for national development priorities as it continues to reduce reliance on oil revenues and pursue ambitious economic reform projects.
The declaration of partnership underscores a shared commitment to long-term cooperation that extends beyond transactional arrangements to encompass broader geopolitical and economic interests.
