British Army Asserts Readiness Amid NATO's Steadfast Dart Exercise
UK troops participate in NATO's largest 2025 exercise near Ukraine; discussions on potential deployment intensify
The British Army has declared its preparedness to deploy to Ukraine if directed by the government.
Currently, 2,500 UK troops from the First Division, the Army's high readiness force, are engaged in NATO's Steadfast Dart 2025 exercise in Romania, approximately 25 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
Brigadier Andy Watson, leading the British contingent, affirmed the brigade's readiness for potential deployment to Ukraine.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed willingness to send British troops to Ukraine to ensure its security, contingent upon a ceasefire.
However, military officials have cautioned that deploying thousands of troops could strain the UK's defense capabilities, given the Army's current size of just over 70,000 regular personnel.
Steadfast Dart 2025, NATO's largest exercise this year, involves over 10,000 military personnel from nine member nations, aiming to demonstrate rapid deployment capabilities and collective defense readiness.
Notably, U.S. forces are not participating directly in this exercise, highlighting Europe's efforts to enhance its military self-sufficiency.
Discussions are ongoing regarding the composition and scale of any potential peacekeeping force in Ukraine, with proposals suggesting a multinational effort to address logistical and resource challenges.
