UN Secretary-General Guterres: Humanitarian Ceasefire Essential to End Gaza 'Nightmare'
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a humanitarian ceasefire to halt the tragic situation in Gaza after the UN Security Council aimed to increase aid with a new resolution.
Speaking at the UN, he noted the unchanging, dire state of the conflict, emphasizing the lack of civilian protection and the reports of over 20,000 Palestinian deaths, with most Gazans displaced. He highlighted the collapse of Gaza's health system, the scarcity of clean water, and the looming threat of a famine.
Guterres insisted that a ceasefire is essential to address the critical needs in Gaza and relieve the residents' suffering. While welcoming the recent Security Council resolution, he stressed the need for broader and immediate action.
He criticized evaluating humanitarian efforts by the number of aid trucks and pointed out that Israel's offensive significantly impedes aid distribution due to security issues, danger to aid workers, logistical challenges, and halted commercial activity.
The Secretary-General detailed the intense Israeli bombardment, the frontline dangers to civilians and humanitarian workers—including the deaths of 136 UNRWA staff—and the difficulty of aid truck logistics at Gaza's border crossings. Destroyed vehicles and impediments to aid delivery were compounded by communication blackouts, further complicating relief efforts.
Finally, Guterres reaffirmed the two-state solution as the sole route to enduring peace and warned of the conflict's regional and global repercussions. He vowed UN commitment to aid and peace efforts and urged the international community to unite in seeking peace, protecting civilians, and supporting the two-state solution with tangible measures.
