UAE's Shaikha Al-Nowais Becomes First Female UNWTO Secretary-General
The UAE's Shaikha Al-Nowais has been elected as the first female secretary-general of the UN World Tourism Organization, marking a historic moment for the global tourism body.
Riyadh: The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Shaikha Al-Nowais has made history by being elected as the new Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), becoming the first woman and the first Gulf national to hold this position in its 50-year existence.
Her four-year term will commence in January 2026, following her confirmation at the 26th UNWTO General Assembly held in Riyadh from November 7-11.
Al-Nowais secured a majority vote from member states during an Executive Council session in Madrid in May.The election of Al-Nowais highlights the rising influence of Gulf countries within the global tourism sector, with nations such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE positioning themselves prominently in the industry.In her address to the General Assembly, the Secretary-General-elect emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating that it is a triumph for all involved, reflecting collective vision for a stronger, more connected, and compassionate world through tourism.
She outlined five core priorities for her mandate: responsible tourism, capacity building, technology for good, innovative financing, and smart governance.Al-Nowais commended the work of the outgoing Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, acknowledging his contributions to strengthening UNWTO's global presence and voice.UNWTO expressed its excitement over Al-Nowais' appointment, stating it represents an inspiring moment as they continue their commitment to a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative future.

She serves as corporate vice president at Rotana Hotels, chairwoman of the Tourism Working Group at the Abu Dhabi Chamber, board member of the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council, and adviser to several national tourism bodies.
