Paris Court to Decide on Release of Former President Sarkozy from Prison
Sarkozy, the first former French head of state in modern times to be imprisoned, awaits a ruling on his early release.
A Paris appeal court is set to determine whether to grant early release to former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who began serving a five-year sentence for his role in an election campaign financing scheme linked to Libya.
The hearing took place on Monday, with Sarkozy, 70, arguing that he has met all the requirements of justice and expressing the difficulty of his situation at his age.
Attending the court were his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and two of his sons.
The focus of the proceedings was not on the motives behind the sentencing but on whether Sarkozy poses a risk to flight or obstructing justice, with Advocate General Damien Brunet advocating for his release under judicial supervision.
A positive ruling could see Sarkozy leave Paris' La Santé prison within hours.
His case is ongoing, including separate legal challenges and investigations related to alleged witness tampering in the Libya case and other proceedings.
