Nigeria and Morocco to Sign Intergovernmental Agreement for Atlantic Gas Pipeline
The agreement aims to advance a major gas pipeline project on the Atlantic coast, strengthening energy collaboration between the two nations.
ABUJA: Nigeria and Morocco anticipate signing an intergovernmental agreement in the fourth quarter of 2026 to further the development of a significant Atlantic coast gas pipeline project.
According to Nigeria's foreign ministry, this planned accord is set to be formalized by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
The anticipated agreement follows preliminary technical studies on the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, also referred to as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline.
This development was discussed during a telephone conversation last Friday between Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, as per the ministry's statement received by Reuters on Tuesday.
Amina Benkhadra, the head of Morocco’s hydrocarbons and mining agency (ONHYM), previously stated to Reuters that an intergovernmental agreement on the proposed $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline would be signed this year.
The project, initially agreed upon a decade ago, encompasses a 6,900 km route combining both offshore and onshore sections with a maximum capacity of 30 billion cubic meters (bcm).
Out of this total, 15 bcm is designated for supply to Morocco and for supporting exports to Europe.
Beyond the energy sector, discussions between Nigeria and Morocco have also touched upon potential collaboration in fertilizer production and distribution.
This collaboration is positioned as crucial for advancing food security across the African continent.
Furthermore, both ministers have emphasized the importance of re-establishing the Nigeria-Morocco Business Council to foster trade and investment.
Such efforts are particularly aimed at leveraging the frameworks of the African Continental Free Trade Area and an existing double taxation treaty.
