Former President Zuma Survives Car Accident: ANC-MK Tensions Amid Allegations of Assassination Attempt

Former South African President Jacob Zuma survived a car accident caused by a drunk driver, but his opposition group, uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), accused the ruling ANC party of involvement and called it an assassination attempt.
This is the second accident in 18 months where a supposedly drunk driver collided with Zuma's motorcade.

The MK party has been monitoring events under the Cyril Ramaphosa government and believes these incidents are related.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma, a veteran of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), was forced out of office in 2018 due to corruption allegations but still holds political influence.

On Thursday, hours after he was barred from standing in the May 29 general election, Zuma was involved in a car accident.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that Zuma's armored state vehicle collided with another car, driven by a 51-year-old man who was arrested for drunken and reckless driving.

Zuma, 81, and his bodyguards were unharmed and taken to his residence.

The ANC (African National Congress) filed a new court application against MK (Mkhize's Imbokodo Party) on Wednesday, aiming to have the party disqualified due to its name and logo being similar to those of the ANC's apartheid-era military wing.

The ANC believes this could confuse or deceive voters.

Duduzile Zuma, Zuma's daughter, accused Ramaphosa's supporters of being behind a car collision involving her father, stating that the police minister responsible for Zuma's protection unit has not upgraded his vehicle in eight years and has previously made comments about burying Zuma.

The text discusses the car accident involving former South African President Jacob Zuma and the political implications for the African National Congress (ANC) party.

ANC politicians have made "dangerous and reckless statements" about Zuma, with one official predicting he would be in the hospital before elections.

The May election could see the ANC dropping below 50% of the votes for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994 due to a weak economy and corruption allegations.

Zuma was sentenced to 15 months in jail in 2021 for refusing to testify to a corruption probe but was released on medical parole.

The driver of the other vehicle in the accident is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

Former South African President Jacob Zuma was involved in a car accident, but despite the serious consequences – including protests, riots, and looting that left over 350 people dead – he remains in good spirits, according to his spokesperson, Mzwanele Ndhlela.

Zuma attended church to pray for peace and to prevent further unrest.
