Austria's domestic intelligence service discovered a weapons cache in Vienna believed to be linked to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, potentially targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions in Europe.
VIENNA: Austria’s domestic intelligence service has uncovered a weapons cache in Vienna that is believed to be linked to the Palestinian militant group Hamas for use in ‘possible terrorist attacks in Europe,’ the government said Thursday.
A 39-year-old unidentified British citizen, reportedly having close ties to the weapons cache, was arrested in London on Monday, according to an interior ministry statement.
The investigation, conducted jointly with Austria’s Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN), targeted a global terrorist organization with links to Hamas.
The weapons cache, found in a rented storage room in Vienna, included five handguns and 10 magazines, intended for unspecified foreign operations linked to Hamas.
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner emphasized the importance of the DSN's international network and commitment to combating extremism.
Britain’s National Crime Agency confirmed the arrest of the British citizen in central London, who remains in custody ahead of an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
