Tangible progress on Saudi Arabia's first large-scale nuclear power plant
Saudi Arabia continues making significant strides towards developing its nuclear energy capabilities.
Sharaf Al-Sharif, head of the Nuclear Energy Technology Development and Innovation Sector at KACARE, reported tangible progress on the project to establish Saudi Arabia’s first large-scale nuclear power plant.
He delivered a keynote speech at the second Saudi International Conference on Nuclear Power Engineering, known as SCOPE, held at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.The Kingdom is advancing in its goal to develop an integrated energy system in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
The technical specifications for the power plant project are being finalized according to international standards, aiming to strengthen national energy security and stimulate local industry.
The conference was organized by the King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy.Al-Sharif highlighted KACARE’s preparation for the next phase, which includes assessing technologies related to small modular reactors.
These reactors offer flexibility and potential for low-emission electricity generation, water desalination, and hydrogen production.
He emphasized that the Kingdom's nuclear energy journey began with confidence and aims for regional and global leadership in peaceful and advanced nuclear technologies.Developing national expertise is a priority in Saudi Arabia’s nuclear program.
