Ukraine Detains Former Power Grid Chief on Fraud Suspicion Amidst Escalating War

Ukraine Detains Former Power Grid Chief on Fraud Suspicion Amidst Escalating War

Court orders pre-trial detention of ex-Ukrenergo head Volodymyr Kudrytsky over alleged embezzlement charges, sparking concerns about political pressure.
A Kyiv court has ordered the pre-trial detention of former Ukrainian state energy operator chief Volodymyr Kudrytsky, accused of embezzling approximately $327,000 in 2018.

The ruling, handed down on Wednesday, follows a period during which President Volodymyr Zelensky faced criticism for not curbing the power of anti-corruption agencies.

Critics argue that this may lead to increased covert pressure on political opponents as Ukraine prepares for its fourth winter amidst conflict with Russia.

Kudrytsky, who served as head of Ukrenergo from 2020 until his dismissal last year, is charged with participating in the embezzlement of 13.7 million hryvnias ($327,000).

The Pechersk District court in Kyiv decided to apply a preventive measure in the form of detention against Kudrytsky, who must now remain in pre-trial detention for two months unless he posts bail totaling $300,000.

Kudrytsky has vehemently denied the allegations, describing the ruling as 'absurd and unfounded.' Anastasia Radina, head of Ukraine’s parliament anti-corruption committee, suggested that the case may be politically motivated, stating that it appears to be nothing more than pressure against Kudrysky.

Several lawmakers have come forward, offering to guarantee his bail.

Kudrytsky's tenure at Ukrenergo spanned critical years during Russia's invasion and the subsequent pressure on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

His unexpected dismissal last year was met with skepticism from some board members who deemed it politically motivated.

This year, the Russian campaign against Ukrainian energy facilities has intensified, reportedly halting 60 percent of Kyiv's natural gas production – a crucial fuel for heating in the country.

The detention of Kudrytsky highlights the tensions between allegations of corruption and concerns over political interference in Ukraine's fight against both physical and financial threats from Russia.

As the conflict prolongs into another winter season, the case serves as an example of the complex legal landscape amidst ongoing hostilities.
