UK Police Arrest Sudanese Teen for Facilitating Illegal Immigration After Five Migrant Deaths in Channel Crossing
UK police arrested an 18-year-old Sudanese man on Wednesday for suspected involvement in facilitating illegal immigration and entering the UK illegally, following the deaths of five migrants, including a child, who drowned while trying to cross the Channel from France.
Two Sudanese nationals and a South Sudanese national were previously detained on similar charges.
The 19-year-old has been released without charge and is now being dealt with by immigration authorities.
Five people, including a seven-year-old girl, drowned in the English Channel near Wimereux, France, when their overcrowded boat's engine failed and they fell into the water.
About 50 people were rescued, but the five could not be revived.
This year, 15 people have died attempting to cross the busy shipping lane from France to England, surpassing the 12 who died in all of last year.
A suspect was arrested in connection to the incident at Manston in Kent, England.
