North Korea's UN Envoy Dismisses Western Plans to Form New Sanctions Monitoring Groups
North Korea's UN envoy, Kim Song, stated that efforts by the US and its allies to form new groups to monitor sanctions on North Korea will be unsuccessful, according to state media KCNA.
This comes in response to a joint statement issued by the US and its allies calling to continue the work of a UN panel of experts monitoring North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs.
Russia previously vetoed the renewal of the panel due to US-led accusations of North Korea transferring weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine.
Kim Song is quoted as saying that these new panels are "bound to meet self-destruction with the passage of time." US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, recently visited the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, urging Russia and China to cease supporting North Korea despite its continued bad behavior and disregard for UN sanctions.
This call came after Russia blocked the renewal of the UN panel of experts tasked with monitoring the implementation of sanctions against North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.
