Saudi Ports' Transshipment Up 15% in August: Mawani
Saudi Arabia's ports handled a surge in transshipment activity, climbing 14.7 percent year on year to 189,407 twenty-foot equivalent units.
JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia's ports managed a significant increase in transshipment activity in August, with volumes rising by 14.7 percent year on year to 189,407 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).
This growth underscores the Kingdom's expanding role as a pivotal global trade hub.
Overall container throughput increased by 9.5 percent to reach 750,634 TEUs during this period, according to Mawani, the Saudi Ports Authority.The rise in container traffic supports various key objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy outlined in Vision 2030, aiming to establish Saudi Arabia as a leading logistics center connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.
This strategy is designed to boost trade flows, enhance maritime industries, improve supply chains, increase tourism, and strengthen food security, thereby providing substantial economic benefits to the Kingdom.Mawani reported that maritime traffic also experienced an upsurge of 13.16 percent, with 1,118 vessels received, compared to 988 in the same month last year.
However, total cargo throughput fell by 12.44 percent to 20.2 million tons.
The ports handled a varied mix of cargo types during this period, including general cargo at 1.08 million tons, dry bulk at 4.58 million tons, and liquid bulk at 14.54 million tons.
Additionally, the ports received 494,950 head of cattle, representing a 17.2 percent increase from the previous year.August saw notable increases in passenger numbers, with an upsurge of 70.1 percent to reach 85,636 passengers compared to 50,345 in the same month last year.
Vehicle traffic also showed growth, increasing by 4.27 percent to handle 107,826 units, up from 103,411 a year earlier.The robust performance in August follows consistent gains made earlier this year.
In July, Saudi ports managed container throughput of 722,502 TEUs, marking a 12 percent increase year on year.
This growth was largely driven by a 35 percent rise in transshipment volumes.
In May, the total container throughput stood at 720,684 TEUs, representing a 13 percent increase compared to the previous month.In recent news, Mawani announced the launch of the GS2/KMP shipping service by Premier Alliance comprising Hyundai Merchant Marine, Ocean Network Express, and Yang Ming.
The new service connects Saudi Arabia with 18 international destinations, including major ports such as Singapore, Shanghai, Busan, Long Beach, and Jebel Ali, offering a total capacity of up to 16,000 TEUs.
This development is expected to further enhance the Kingdom's connectivity in global trade networks.In parallel, Mawani continues to foster regional partnerships for industrial growth.
The authority’s president, Suliman Mazroua, met with Hussein bin Yahya Fadli, CEO of Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries, to discuss potential joint investment projects.
This partnership aims to strengthen the role of Jazan Port as a leading industrial hub.
Additionally, Mazroua briefed Jazan’s Governor Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Mohammed on the significance of ports in supporting global trade and reinforcing the national economy.
