A Saudi Arabian delegation from the National Center for Palms and Dates visited Alibaba Group Holding's headquarters in China to establish partnerships and increase international sales of Saudi dates.
The goal was to enable 23 Saudi date companies to use
Alibaba's e-commerce platform to market their dates abroad.
During the visit, a forum was held to showcase companies from both countries, and agreements and memorandums of understanding were signed to boost trade exchanges.
This collaboration follows an agreement signed in Riyadh last December, and there has been a significant increase in Saudi date exports to China, with SR644 million ($172 million) worth exported in the first quarter of 2024, a 13.7 percent rise from the previous year.
The visit is part of efforts to expand Saudi date exports and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
Saudi Arabia is the world's leading exporter of dates, with significant growth in exports to countries like Austria, Norway, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, Germany, Canada, Morocco, Indonesia, South Korea, the UK, the US, and Malaysia.
Exports increased by over 100 percent to some countries, and overall production exceeds 1.6 million tons annually with over 36 million palm trees.
The Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture is working to enhance the quality of farm products through good agricultural practices and factory quality standards.
