Saudi Artist Revitalizes Riyadh with Pixel Art

Saudi artist Khaled Makshoush has reinvented scenes from Riyadh using his expertise in pixel art, creating a unique, calming, and modern art form.
Employing a technique reminiscent of old-school video games, Makshoush uses his tablet and stylus to depict diverse Riyadh landscapes—from bustling construction sites with towering cranes to the iconic streets of the city and the tranquil, terracotta-hued desert.

Speaking to Arab News, Makshoush expressed his inspiration drawn from Riyadh’s urban and industrial vistas, and the general desert scenery of Saudi Arabia, energized by the nation’s dynamic transformations.

His artwork transcends traditional depictions, inviting viewers into reimagined spaces that evoke the emotional essence of places. Makshoush delves into the intrinsic feel of locations to form imaginative settings that convey these sentiments in his art.

The use of color is prominent in his work. Starting with a few key hues to set the painting's mood, he then introduces complementary colors to enhance the piece's emotional impact.

Through his art, Makshoush reflects Riyadh's rapid evolution, revealing the vibrant city life of the Saudi capital. His work offers a window into his personal worldview and cultural experiences.

Makshoush's creative process is fueled by his excursions within Riyadh; the city's transformation and distinctive character inspire his art subjects, such as the final moments of a sunset or the nighttime illumination of cranes.

His creations, though fictitious, resonate with viewers, capturing the essence of Riyadh while adding his interpretive flair.

Locals have responded positively, often feeling a sense of familiarity with his reimagined settings.

Makshoush believes in art's societal value, asserting it provides insights into our collective consciousness and captures the zeitgeist by revealing emotions, appearances, and perspectives of a certain era.
