Saudi Arabia Expands National Register of Architectural Heritage
Kingdom adds nearly 6,000 new sites to national heritage list, bringing total to over 34,000.
The Kingdom has expanded its national register of architectural heritage by adding 5,969 new sites.
The addition brings the total number of registered architectural heritage sites in Saudi Arabia to 34,171, showcasing the diversity and richness of the country's cultural heritage.
The newly registered sites are spread across various regions: Asir with 3,893 sites, Qassim with 761 sites, Baha with 499 sites, Makkah with 483 sites, Riyadh with 258 sites, Hail with 60 sites, Jazan with eight sites, Jouf with four sites, and the Eastern Province with three sites.
The Heritage Commission stated that it continues to actively register architectural heritage sites across all regions.
This registration process aims to protect these sites from encroachment or neglect, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
As part of this effort, a comprehensive database is being developed, including digital maps, documentation, and photographic archives.
Citizens are encouraged to report urban heritage sites through the commission's reporting platform or regional branches.
Additionally, the Heritage Commission recently announced the addition of 744 new archaeological sites to the National Antiquities Register, bringing that total to 10,061.
The newly registered archaeological sites are distributed among various regions, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the kingdom's efforts to document and preserve its cultural heritage.
