Russia demands clarification on potential resumption of nuclear testing due to recent comments by US President Donald Trump.
Moscow has called for the United States to provide clarity regarding the intentions behind the recent remarks made by President
Donald Trump concerning a possible return to nuclear testing.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, such a move could prompt significant responses from other countries, given its implications. The request for clarification stems from an order issued by Trump last week directing the US military to begin preparing for the resumption of nuclear weapons testing after a hiatus that lasted 33 years.
It remains unclear whether this directive encompasses the resumption of nuclear-explosive testing overseen by the National Nuclear Security Administration or the testing of missiles capable of carrying nuclear payloads. In response to these uncertain developments, Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed top officials to formulate recommendations for potential nuclear testing by Russia in the event that the US proceeds with its plans.
Notably, this would mark the first nuclear test conducted by Moscow since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Both Russia and the United States possess the largest nuclear arsenals globally.
