Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban seeks a waiver on American sanctions against Russian oil during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington.
BUDAPEST: Hungarian Prime Minister
Viktor Orban, the European Union's closest ally to both U.S. President
Donald Trump and the Kremlin, is set to meet Trump in Washington on Friday.
The purpose of this meeting is to seek a waiver on American sanctions imposed on Russian oil following Trump's return to the White House.
The United States sanctioned Russia's two largest oil producers last month as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Hungary, heavily dependent on Russian oil and gas despite EU efforts to diversify energy supplies, faces significant economic implications if these sanctions are applied to its energy imports.
Accompanied by a large delegation including six ministers, Orban has emphasized his objective of achieving concrete results from the meeting with Trump.
In a recent interview with Italy's La Repubblica daily, he acknowledged that Hungary relies heavily on Russian oil and gas, stating that without them, energy prices would surge and lead to supply shortages.
The agenda for the meeting also includes discussions on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Budapest was initially considered as a potential host for a US-Russia summit but the plan was abandoned before a specific date was set.
The meeting with Trump is seen by experts as an opportunity for Orban to bolster his political position domestically ahead of crucial elections scheduled for spring next year, amid economic stagnation and ongoing challenges to his 15-year rule.
Orban has described the upcoming meeting as marking a new chapter in Hungarian-American relations, which have been mixed since Trump's re-election.
While there has been some easing of sanctions against Orban's government and restoration of Hungary's status in a visa waiver scheme, Trump's tariffs on the European Union have impacted Hungary's automobile industry, exacerbating economic difficulties.
Daniel Hegedus, Central Europe Director at the German Marshall Fund, suggests that while concrete outcomes are uncertain, the meeting may yield symbolic victories for Orban.
Trump has shown willingness to support ideological allies, potentially leading to some form of relief on Orban’s request regarding Russian oil sanctions.
However, any such concessions would need careful navigation given Washington's stringent enforcement measures against firms associated with sanctioned Russian companies.
Orban, known for his opposition to EU policies and refusal to supply military aid to Ukraine, has faced numerous confrontations with Brussels over rule-of-law issues.
