North Korea Sends 600 Trash-Filled Balloons into South Korea, Violating Armistice Agreement
North Korea released approximately 600 trash-filled balloons into South Korea during the night, as reported by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff on Sunday.
The balloons, which contained waste such as cigarette butts, cloth, paper, and plastic, were discovered in Seoul from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m. (1100 GMT on Saturday to 0100 GMT on Sunday).
The military is currently monitoring the launch site and conducting aerial reconnaissance to locate and recover the balloons.
This is the latest provocation from North Korea, following an incident on Wednesday where they sent hundreds of balloons carrying trash and excrement across the border.
South Korea strongly condemned these actions, with Defense Minister Shin Won-sik stating that they violate the armistice agreement during a meeting with US Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd in Singapore.
North and South Korea have pledged a coordinated response to any threats or provocations from North Korea, following the discovery of trash balloons sent from the North.
The balloons were found in South Korea's North Gyeongsang and Gangwon provinces and some parts of Seoul on Sunday.
Emergency alerts were issued, urging people to avoid contact with the balloons and report any sightings to the police.
South Korea's National Security Council is set to meet to discuss the possibility of resuming propaganda broadcasts across the border in response.
South Korea had previously stopped such broadcasts following a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2018.
