McDonald's Global Technology Outage Causes Store Closures and Disruptions in Multiple Countries
McDonald's experienced a technology outage that caused store closures and disrupted online and app orders in multiple countries including the US, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and the UK.
The issue was not related to a cybersecurity event, according to McDonald's statement to CNN.
The cause and extent of the outage were not provided in detail.
A McDonald's store in New York reported the system went down around 1 a.m. and came back online around 5 a.m. McDonald's Japan also reported temporary store closures.
A system outage affected McDonald's restaurants in the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. ET.
Staff had to take orders in person and communicate them to the kitchen.
McDonald's Australia confirmed the issue, and McDonald's Hong Kong reported issues with mobile ordering and self-ordering kiosks.
The McDelivery service in Taiwan also suspended online and telephone ordering due to the system failure.
McDonald's Taiwan reported internet disruptions affecting some of its restaurants and McDelivery service on Friday.
The company is investigating and making repairs, according to TVBS broadcaster.
McDonald's has over 41,800 stores globally, with the US being its largest market, and Japan, the UK, and Australia having the next highest numbers of restaurants, with nearly 3,000, close to 1,500, and just over 1,000 respectively.
