DAR ES SALAAM: A collision between a bus and a minibus in Tanzania has led to the tragic loss of 38 lives following an ensuing fire from the crash, as reported by the presidency on Sunday.
The accident occurred in Sabasaba, located within the Kilimanjaro region, on Saturday evening after one of the bus's tires punctured, causing the driver to lose control.
The presidential statement detailed that a total of 38 people perished in the crash, including two women, with an additional 28 individuals suffering injuries.
Despite the efforts to identify the deceased, it was noted that due to the extent of the burns, 36 bodies remain unidentified.
Currently, six of the injured are undergoing treatment in hospital facilities.
This incident underscores the frequency of deadly crashes on Tanzania's roads.
According to a 2018 World Health Organization report, an estimated 13,000 to 19,000 people were killed in traffic accidents in Tanzania in 2016, significantly exceeding the official government toll of 3,256.
