Macron Criticizes UK's Rwanda Asylum Plan as Ineffective and Cynical
French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the UK's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda as "ineffective" and showing "cynicism." He expressed his disbelief in the model of sending illegal immigrants to African countries and warned against creating a "geopolitics of cynicism" that goes against European values and will be ineffective.
Macron praised the cooperation between France and the UK on defense issues.
The UK Parliament passed a law on Tuesday allowing undocumented asylum seekers to be sent to Rwanda for processing and housing if their claims are successful.
This is a key policy for the Conservative government led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is trying to gain ground against the opposition Labour Party in upcoming elections.
The UK also pays France to help police its northern coast and prevent migrants from making dangerous boat crossings.
Sadly, five people, including a child, died in an attempted crossing on Tuesday, bringing the total deaths on this route in 2023 to 15.
French President Emmanuel Macron praised the strong military cooperation between France and the UK, despite Brexit.
He considered the British as deep natural allies and the treaties binding the two countries as a solid foundation.
Macron suggested strengthening these ties and encouraged France to seek similar partnerships with other EU members.
