Israel Declares World Safer After Alleged Death of Hezbollah Leader Nasrallah Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions
Israel claims Nasrallah’s death boosts global safety; strikes deepen Lebanon's crisis.
Israel's military declared that the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has made the world safer, while vowing to target other senior members of the Iran-backed group, following a deadly strike in South Beirut. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari emphasized Nasrallah was a significant enemy of Israel, prompting new public safety regulations, including a ban on gatherings over 1,000 people in central Israel.
Meanwhile, the Houthi movement in Yemen mourns Nasrallah's death, affirming that resistance will continue to grow stronger. Hezbollah and the Houthis, both part of the Iran-backed Axis of Resistance against Israel, have been collaborating, with the Houthis launching repeated attacks on Israeli-affiliated targets.
On the escalation front, Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah's stronghold in southern Beirut, following their claim of killing Nasrallah, though this remains unconfirmed. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that the strikes resulted in 11 deaths, 108 injuries, and widespread displacement, further deepening the crisis in Lebanon.
This conflict is taking a toll on Lebanon’s economy, which is expected to contract by 1 percent in 2024, with hopes of a 2 percent growth in 2025 contingent on reforms and an IMF program. Despite a drop in inflation, unemployment remains high, painting a challenging economic picture for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region in the near future.
In the diplomatic arena, Saudi Arabia is urging the UN Security Council to resolve the Palestinian crisis, supporting a two-state solution as essential for peace. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan emphasized the Kingdom's collaborative efforts with Norway and the EU and called for the recognition of the State of Palestine based on 1967 borders.
Closing on a humanitarian note, Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah met with Joyce Msuya from the UN to discuss global humanitarian issues amid the 79th UN General Assembly in NYC. Msuya praised the Kingdom’s efforts in providing aid through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, highlighting Saudi Arabia's commitment to international humanitarian initiatives.
