Drone Scare Halts Traffic at Sweden’s Second-Biggest Airport
Authorities investigate suspected drone sightings at Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport, leading to temporary airspace closure.
GOTHENBURG, Sweden: Traffic was halted at the Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport on Sweden's west coast on Thursday after one or more drones were observed at the airport, according to authorities.
This incident is the latest in a series of disruptions caused by drones across Europe in recent months.
Drones have led to major disruptions and temporary airport closures in several countries, with some officials suggesting that these incidents may be part of hybrid warfare efforts by Russia.
However, Moscow has denied any involvement in these events.
The Swedish civil aviation agency LFV confirmed the presence of a drone or drones at Landvetter Airport.
The police were called to investigate and gather information on the sightings reported by multiple individuals at around 1641 GMT.
An investigation into suspected aviation sabotage was subsequently launched.
Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport is Sweden's second-largest airport, following Stockholm Arlanda, as per data from airport operator Swedavia.
In response to the drone sighting, authorities closed the airspace above the airport until the police completed their investigation.
Similar incidents have occurred in neighboring countries.
On Tuesday, drone sightings led to the temporary closures of airports and a military air base in Belgium, which its defense minister described as a coordinated attack.
In Norway, an investigation into suspected drone sightings that caused the shutdown of Oslo's airport in September was ultimately inconclusive due to insufficient evidence.
Several Danish airports, including Copenhagen, also experienced temporary closures in September following reported drone sightings.
