UN Chief Calls for Urgent Action to Prevent Gaza Famine, Urges Israel to Open Crossing Points and Ensure Safe Access for Aid
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reported on Tuesday that there have been modest advancements in preventing a potential famine in the northern part of Gaza Strip, but significant actions are still required.
Guterres emphasized the need for Israel to honor its commitment to open two crossing points between Israel and northern Gaza, enabling aid to be transported into Gaza from Ashdod port and Jordan.
Additionally, Guterres highlighted the pressing issue of inadequate security for aid workers and civilians as a significant barrier to distributing aid throughout Gaza.
He urged the Israeli authorities to grant permission and facilitate unhindered access for humanitarian aid and humanitarian workers, including UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of aid across Gaza.
