UK Foreign Secretary Joins Saudi-British Women's Network Majlis to Foster Cooperation
The first majlis of the Saudi-British Women's Network, co-chaired by Lama Alhamawi and held at the UK Embassy in Riyadh, aims to empower women and enhance bilateral ties.
RIYADH: The Saudi-British Women’s Network convened a Women’s Majlis on Sunday in Riyadh, with the attendance of UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, to bolster women’s influence and encourage dialogue between the two nations.
Held to coincide with Cooper’s visit, this inaugural majlis marks the network's effort to elevate women’s voices, facilitate collaboration, and strengthen Saudi-UK ties through mentorship and community engagement on a gender-specific level.
According to Alhamawi, the event not only serves as a platform for diplomatic ties but also actively supports women by fostering shared dialogue and cooperation across various sectors, including education and investment.
The majlis brought together prominent female figures from both countries representing law, government, business, and media, highlighting progress in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to place women in leadership positions under Vision 2030.
The establishment of the Saudi-British Women's Network occurred during the 9th Future Investment Initiative, with Alhamawi and UK chairwoman Rebecca Cousins signing a memorandum of understanding alongside founders Atifa Shah and Rachel Reeves.
Shah emphasized that this first majlis symbolizes the network’s mission to create spaces for women to share perspectives and support growth.
Deputy British Ambassador Dr. Alice Burt expressed delight at the event being held at the British Embassy, praising the network's creation of intimate spaces for Saudi and British women to connect and exchange ideas.
This dialogue signifies the depth of friendship between the two countries and their shared commitment to supporting women’s leadership.
