UK Foreign Secretary Considers Sanctions Against Israeli Minister Over Gaza Camp Plans
The UK foreign secretary has suggested that Israel's defense minister could face sanctions over plans to relocate Gaza's population into a camp in the south of the territory.
LONDON: The UK foreign secretary, David Lammy, has expressed strong condemnation for Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, over his plans to establish a ‘humanitarian city’ in the ruins of Rafah, intended to initially house 600,000 people.
The camp would involve relocating the entire Gaza population—over 2 million people—and those entering would be screened and not allowed to leave.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has described the proposed site as a 'concentration camp' that would deprive Palestinians of their homeland. The UK government is facing increasing pressure, including from within its ranks, to take further action against Israel amid reports of atrocities in Gaza.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his appalment over reports of civilians being killed while attempting to access aid, emphasizing the need for thorough and transparent investigations into these incidents.
Critics, however, argue that the prime minister has not taken a sufficiently tough stance on Israel's actions.Additionally, almost 60 Labour MPs have demanded that the UK immediately recognize Palestine as a state in response to Katz’s plans.
They argue that failing to recognize Palestine undermines the policy of a two-state solution and supports the status quo that sees the erasure and annexation of Palestinian territory.
French President Emmanuel Macron has also urged the recognition of Palestine during his state visit, suggesting it is the only path to peace.
