Turkey and Iraq Discuss Border Security Cooperation Amidst Ongoing Operations Against PKK Militants
Turkey is holding talks with Iraq to offer technical assistance to secure Iraq's borders and prevent the movement of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants.
This comes after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Baghdad and Irbil, during which strategic and defense cooperation deals were signed.
The Turkish official stated that Ankara is prepared to help Iraq with border security systems.
A delegation from Iraq recently visited Turkey to explore border security cooperation, including Turkey's proposed systems.
Discussions are ongoing, and during a joint press conference with Erdogan, Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Sudani announced plans for increased border security collaboration without mentioning the PKK.
The PKK, a Kurdish militant group that has been waging an insurgency against Turkey since 1984 and is labeled as a terrorist organization by Ankara and its allies, was not explicitly mentioned.
Turkey has conducted military operations against the PKK in northern Iraq since 2019.
