Trump to Meet Qatar's Prime Minister Amid Push for Gaza Ceasefire Deal

US President Donald Trump is set to meet with Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani as efforts continue to secure a ceasefire and hostage-release deal in the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict.
US President Donald Trump will host Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani at the White House on Wednesday, according to the president's daily schedule.

The meeting comes as Trump pushes for progress on a Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release deal.

Israeli and Hamas negotiators have been in talks since July 6 in Doha, discussing a US-backed proposal for a 60-day ceasefire that includes a phased release of hostages, Israeli troop withdrawals from parts of Gaza, and discussions on ending the conflict.

The White House stated that Trump hopes the negotiations will be 'straightened out' this week.

Additionally, mediators from the US, Qatar, and Egypt have been working to secure an agreement between Israel and Hamas.

However, disagreements remain over the extent of Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave.

The latest violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict escalated in October 2023 when Hamas attacked Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the capture of about 250 hostages, according to Israel.

In response, Israel's military assault has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

The conflict has also led to accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and war crimes at the International Criminal Court.

Israel denies these accusations.

A previous two-month ceasefire ended on March 18 when Israeli strikes killed more than 400 Palestinians.

Trump has proposed a US takeover of Gaza, which was condemned globally as a proposal of 'ethnic cleansing.' The meeting between Trump and Sheikh Mohammed is also expected to address efforts to resume talks with Iran regarding a new nuclear agreement.
