U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum intended to eliminate Iran's oil exports entirely in order to impede the development of nuclear weapons.
On February 4, 2025, U.S. President
Donald Trump revived the 'maximum pressure' strategy against Iran, aiming to eliminate the nation’s oil exports to hinder its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
He issued a presidential memorandum instructing the Treasury Secretary to implement strict economic sanctions and ensure their application.
Trump criticized former President
Joe Biden for not adequately enforcing sanctions, asserting that this oversight enabled Iran to finance its nuclear weapons initiative.
Iran has denied any intentions to develop nuclear weapons, although the International Atomic Energy Agency has reported that Iran is enriching uranium to levels nearing weapons-grade.
The memorandum also aims to reinstate international sanctions linked to the 2015 nuclear agreement, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2018. European countries have suggested they might activate the reimposition of sanctions if Iran persists in advancing its nuclear program.
