Trump Expresses Hope for Future Meeting with Kim Jong Un

US President Donald Trump expresses his intention to meet North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un again, potentially this year, during a meeting with South Korea's new president at the White House.
US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he hopes to meet with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un again, possibly before the end of the year.

This sentiment was expressed during his discussion with South Korea’s newly elected President Lee Jae Myung at the White House.

The meeting began awkwardly due to previous statements from Trump criticizing recent raids in South Korea involving churches.

Before Lee's arrival at the White House, Trump took to social media to criticize what he referred to as a 'Purge or Revolution' in South Korea.

This criticism appeared to be directed towards the church raids.

During their meeting in the Oval Office, Lee praised Trump profusely, and despite the earlier sharp words from Trump, he dismissed them by stating that there was likely a misunderstanding surrounding the issue.

Trump emphasized his belief that both he and Lee are on the same page regarding North Korea's nuclear program.

He highlighted his personal relationship with Kim, mentioning that he knows him 'better than anybody, almost, other than his sister.' Trump expressed optimism about possibly meeting Kim again this year and reducing tensions between the two nations.

Trump noted a decrease in the number of rockets fired by North Korea since his return to office in January.

He claimed to have solved seven wars in as many months but had been quiet on North Korea despite engaging in personal diplomacy during his previous tenure.

North Korea has refused to discuss ending its nuclear program, and tensions have risen due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, where Russia has supported North Korea by sending thousands of troops to fight.

Lee, who is known for criticizing the US military, flattered Trump by stating that he believes Trump can bring about peace.

He also mentioned a desire to see Trump meet with Kim Jong Un again and even joked about the construction of a Trump Tower in North Korea.

The meeting between Trump and Lee touched on various sensitive topics, including the South Korean government's potential compensation for hosting US troops in their country.

Trump suggested that the US might seek ownership of the land used by their military bases.

He also addressed the issue of 'comfort women' who were forced into sexual slavery during Japan’s rule from 1910 to 1945.

Lee visited Tokyo before his meeting with Trump, which was praised by the US president.

Overall, the discussions between Trump and Lee Jae Myung touched upon the complex relationship between the US, North Korea, South Korea, and Japan, highlighting ongoing tensions and efforts towards diplomacy and peace.
