Chinese President Xi Jinping urges China and Russia to work together in building a more 'equitable' international order.
BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping told the visiting Russian parliament speaker on Tuesday that China and Russia should jointly safeguard their security and development interests.
This statement comes amid ongoing global tensions and efforts by both nations to establish a more 'equitable' international order.
The two countries should continue their traditional friendship and deepen strategic mutual trust, according to state-run Xinhua news agency's quotation of Xi.
The comments come as US President
Donald Trump has threatened to impose 'massive' sanctions on Russia in the coming weeks, depending on progress in his efforts to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier this month, Trump held a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, but has so far been unable to arrange a meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Meanwhile, Trump also stated that China must provide the United States with rare earth magnets or face a 200 percent tariff increase.
This announcement comes as Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia's State Duma lower house of parliament, arrived in China on Monday ahead of Putin's scheduled visit this weekend.
During his trip, Putin is set to meet with leaders from the Global South, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at a security forum.
Additionally, as tensions rise between India and the US regarding tariffs, Russian and Chinese relations serve as 'a source of stability for world peace,' according to Xi.
Furthermore, Putin will be the principal foreign guest of honor at a military parade in Beijing next week commemorating Japan's formal surrender and marking the end of World War II.
This event is expected to showcase China's modernizing armed forces and highlight the significant role played by China and the former Soviet Union during World War II.
As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, the strengthening relationship between China and Russia holds significant implications for global security.
