Sweden to Send Reduced Battalion of 400-500 Troops to NATO in Latvia in Early 2023
Sweden will send a reduced battalion of mechanized troops to Latvia next year to support NATO's Enhanced Forward Presence, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
This is the first troop contribution from Sweden since joining NATO in March.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson made the announcement during a press conference with Latvian counterpart Evika Silina.
The battalion was previously announced in January as part of efforts to boost defense capacity in the region.
A battalion of approximately 400-500 troops, including CV 90s armored vehicles and Leopard 2 main battle tanks, is set to be deployed in Latvia for six months starting early next year, following a parliament decision.
